KETOGENIC DIET: Just Another Fad Diet?
HOW DO I KNOW THAT WHAT I AM DOING IS RIGHT FOR ME?
I love it when the “fad diet world” gets a hold of a term and drives it into the ground. One of the tell-tell signs of a “fad diet” is the fact that they focus on one thing and not the whole.
When I was in nursing school we were taught “holistic nursing.” We assessed a patient’s physical, mental, emotional, and psychosocial status. The person’s illness alone was not the focus.
Any “diet” or way of eating that focuses on “one” thing, by eliminating everything but one thing or eliminating one thing while eating everything else…is a fad diet plain and simple.
Dr. A discourages this practice. He does this because he knows that to “teach” a person the healthiest way to eat, that you need all nutrients, fats, carbohydrates and proteins, in order to have a healthy body.
What’s in the buzz term “ketogenic diet” these days? The popular finds of ketogenesis is simply another term for “fat burn.” Those of you on program know that term well and know how to get into a “ketogenic state” or “fat burn.” However, I want to make it clear that what we promote is not the popular ketogenic diet that is out there.
What makes us different? For starters, we are NOT a “diet” but a way of life.
*We use fats, but not high fat content and these are strictly chosen for light fat burn. (The Ketogenic diets are not fat selective and contain non healthy fats.) If you want to make a change for maintenance, you need to eat healthier fats and train your mind and body to do so.
*We use low glycemic carbohydrates. While Ketogenic fads get this, we already have a list of what those are and Dr. A has a color code chart in his book to follow. If you restrict carbohydrates so low, like what is done in some fad diets, you will create a craving cycle and you will eventually binge undoing any weight loss that you may have accomplished.
*We have a protein rich program and every ingredient in the fuelings have already been measured for you. The protein insures that you have enough of this type of fuel to build muscle while in the gym or exercise and prevents muscle loss while in fat burn.
*Timing: Dr. A says that the times that you eat are just as important as what you eat. If you do not fuel your body at least 6 times a day, you will not only create craving cycles, you will also have labile blood sugars which put you at risk for diabetes.
*Support: Don’t forget that with this journey you have access to doctor/nurse phone calls and podcasts, coach podcasts, face book support sites, Dr. A’s educational system, free personal coach support, Dr. A’s website where you can browse topics…and so much more. A fad diet alone simply does not do this for you. (by the way if you are on program and haven’t done at least “some” of all of these supports, you are shorting yourself.)
*We are behavior oriented focusing on the “how” to change those behaviors that caused your unhealthy state and change them long-term.
*Mind/Body/Spirit: My services are geared toward these three components. This is part of the holistic approach that I have adopted. A fad diet doesn’t do this for you.
In short, you need all the nutrients and mineral load that your body craves. You simply cannot get this with a “fad” diet and that includes ketogenic diets.
